As a part of the excursion of Oita Elementary School 6th graders, there planned an itinerary for children to give non-native Japanese an English tour around Nagasaki tourist spots. Actually, this group-tour English studying program with foreigners had been successfully carried out following last year’s one since it caught on among those concerned with the school in 2018.

This year, two dozens exchange students of whom some out of GP members volunteered to be kids’ English practice partners accompanying and strolling together.

In the afternoon on Sunday, May 25th, they got together to meet about 90 pupils at the venue. Kids were already divided into some groups and 2 -3 volunteers were assigned to each group. Then self-intro time kicked off. It was impressive that kids were very good at using English to introduce themselves!

After warming up and breaking the ice, each group headed to each destination along each plan which was designed beforehand by pupils. For some international students, though they’ve stayed Nagasaki for many years, it turned out to be a golden opportunity to visit popular tourist attractions and historical sites they’ve never dropped in before since they don’t usually have plenty of time to do so due to their busy everyday with studies and researches at uni. More to say, this time, sweet and smart little kids guides offered comments and well organized information in English!

Needless to say, kids’ behavior to practice their English skills as much as they can and hardworking attitude touched student volunteers as well.

Thankfully, this initiative has just proved that Nagasaki bears a goldmine with many fellows of diverse backgrounds.

GP appreciates that the Oita elementary school makes good use of this Nagasaki’s remarkable resources of both academic and personnel every year and hope to welcome the pupils again in the future!!

Here in Nagasaki, there is a cruise ships doc at Matsugae Pier and many international cruise ships call at this port every year.

Then, GP regularly recruits volunteer guide interpreters for cruise ship passengers, upon taking on a request from Nagasaki city who manages the cruise ship port call schedule.

Cruise ship passengers are given certain amount of time to disembark and travel around a destination’s tourist attractions once a ship drops in a port. In this regard, volunteers who can eligibly understand both Japanese and a native language of passengers help tourists by giving them a briefing and tips on where and how to go sightseeing.

On May 26th, four Taiwanese students welcomed a gigantic cruise ship from Taiwan carrying huge mass of passengers, not only Taiwanese but some from southeastern countries. They played an important role both in Taiwanese and English. Cruise ship crew also appreciated the volunteer students’ “omotenashi” as well.

Here in Nagasaki, we have a professional soccer team called "V-VAREN NAGASAKI" and it is one of vigorous teams of Japan League (J-2).

When it takes on its rival teams on its home field, Isahaya stadium, such as once or twice in a month, it calls for many home game volunteers to successfully run games. Participant students usually join in task force such as logistics, trash collecting, set-up/breakdown, greeting stations, and so forth.

But thanks to kindness of the V-Varen Nagasaki’s administrative team this time, the team offered us a special opportunity for students, especially first-time volunteer fellows, to experience the home stadium atmosphere. There prepared a speech of the team’s president, Mr. Takata, free time to stroll and hang around the stadium, and invitation to unreserved seats to watch the match!!

(As long as this initiative was named as “V-Varen Nagasaki Home Game Staff Volunteer,” participants worked on tidying and cleaning up the stadium after the match, more or less!)

Furthermore, it’s noteworthy to say that a free charter bus was arranged to carry all the volunteer students between uni and the stadium! They usually need to go to the stadium on their own, which is always a big hurdle for students living in Nagasaki city and exchange students who are quite unfamiliar to Isahaya to participate in this volunteer activity.

Then 4 foreign mates from GP member hopefully joined in with other Japanese buddies, and they got honored to meet the president, excited to feel the swelling air of V-Varen supporters, and impressed by how people work together in backstage to make this big game happen.

Even though it was challenging to participate in for some whose Japanese-ability was fairly basic, they soon got built friendships regardless of languages and nationalities. Sport event activity definitely proved that language barrier was always broken down amid mingling and sweating together.

And it’s no doubt that proud and affection toward Nagasaki and its representative team have been nurtured among youths, owing to this special opportunity.

Cafe Talk

“Café Talk*” is a monthly event of GP and its newly joined freshmen member students took initiative to plan and arrange this month’s “Café Talk,” which went a nut!!

Being a debut event for those freshmen, they were full of spirit with many ideas and plans to make this event international and participant-friendly.

Finally, the game “Guess what’s in the Box??” was held as a highlighted icebreaker!

In a container, there was beforehand placed many Japanese traditional and staple “Japan-like” toys and stationary. International participant students were asked to stick their hands into a box to see if they can determine what objects they were in a box.

What made this game more thrilled but funnier was that the sensory boxes didn’t have any windows so that the audience could also had no idea what were placed inside.

They got excited to see international students being puzzled or surprised while fingering objects in boxes but they themselves had to guess what the objects were.

“Is it round?”  - “Yes, but very small and it has a short stick onto it.”

“Soft?” –“No. It feels like a mushroom, though.”

“What about the weight?” –“Very light!”

“Is it Koma (a spinning top)??”

They threw many kinds of questions to foreign students in English and tried getting closer to “BINGO”!

Following the game, participants were divided into several groups and enjoyed talking about objects of games from all over the world, that have been traditionally played and stand the test of time.

Actually, some of Japanese traditional toys bear strong resemblance to something played in a popular game in some other Asian countries. How interesting.

This café talk is usually open to everybody besides uni/college mates but a neighboring high school students heard the reputation and bustling of GP Café Talk, and a dozen of upper school girls visited and joined us this time!

Thank you all for coming to GP Café Talk and looking forward to seeing you again next month!

*”Café Talk” is a round-table chatting where participants talk over themes given. It aims to promote interaction among students regardless of schools, gender, faculties, ages, and nationalities, while chatting freely as if they do just like at a café.

As May is one of the high seasons for many cruise ships to come call at Nagasaki port, here has come quite a lot of terns for students from Taiwan and Japanese who learn Chinese/Taiwanese as well.

For the one arriving on 15th, one female Taiwanese student raised her hand to volunteer. This was actually the second time for her to join in then she managed to take care of passengers better than before. As same as the last time, her motivation to participate in this volunteering work is “to contribute society. No doubt that she’s done a superb job contributing both Nagasaki and her home country.

On May 13th, one of the biggest cruise ships came all the way to Japan from Taiwan to call at Nagasaki port, 3 GP member students (Taiwanese girls) stood by from very early morning to welcome the disembarking passengers.

It was nice opportunity to meet people not only from their home country but also from Thailand and Canada.

This diverse communication experience has driven volunteer students to study more about Nagasaki and multi languages so that they could guide next coming cruise ship passengers much better.

2019/Nagasaki “Saruku” 2019 (GP ver.)

Do you know “Saruku”? “Saruku” is Nagasaki dialect for strolling around town. In Nagasaki, there are several non-profit organizations and volunteer groups which serve city-walk sightseeing tour, “Nagasaki Saruku,” to tourists.

Nagasaki “Glocal” Alliance Project (GP) core members were eager to hold Nagasaki Saruku event of GP version as last year, so that freshmen and newly arrived exchange students could experience the town while hitting it off with new mates and fellows.

The weather on the day was on our side and nearly 50 buddies participated in, including international buddies from Canada, China, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan.

They were initially split into 6 groups and each group visited here and there as they pleased respectively.

Some groups enjoyed completing famous attractions such as Dejima warf, Suwa Shrine, Oura Cathedral, and such. The others targeted retro cafes, some others looked around for pretty knickknacks and stationary in variety shops, and some wandered into interesting backstreets.

It was exactly “how you enjoy town-strolling varies one by one.”

No doubt, however, that all participants finally had encountered many things which were brand new and eye-opening for them regardless of backgrounds.
